Richard O. Burdick's I Ching Music

Composer Richard Burdick has been working with the I Ching as a Structural Foundation for his music compositions since around 1980. The relationship of scale to Hexagram pattern has gone through four revisions and now the fifth set has beautiful symmetry balance and integrity.

Notable works with the fifth scale set are:

Opus 200  I Ching Scales version 5

Opus 201  I Ching Base Tones (this will be released late in 2013 as a meditation DVD)

Notable works with the third scale set are:

CD28 Waves and Particles Cd. This is the only music made public where I used the thirds period scales set (the ultra-chromatic set). The particles CD has been recorded but I have about 30 hours of work to do to finalize the tracks - I may not do this for many years.

Notable works with the second scale set are:

Opus 139  More than 64 Solos for solo horn (buy sheet music)

Opus 132   Sixty-four Duets for two horn (buy sheet music)

Notable works with the first scale set are:

Opus 19   The Planets for solo horn (buy sheet music)

2013 Version five of the I Ching Scales is final and the final set.

July 2009:
I've been around the horn with this. The second period scales, which are the scales I used in my opus 132, duets and opus 139 solos for horn, is the best set of scales for an equal tempered tuning system. The third set of scales is not winning any grants from Canada Council or Sask. Arts Board yet, but as I write my horn trios(opus 156) #1 starts the Renaissance, #15 is awakening and #16 is fully micro-tonal. It's just too cool. Altered tone make me perk up and listen more attentively. With my experience on natural horn, I can put a pitch anywhere, so too this will be expanding my horizons.

“This CD proves that what may have sounded weird sixty years ago now sounds normal and often beautiful.”

There are many lesser-known 20th century composers, who have great worth!

Let’s not forget the music of:
Wendell Otey
Alan Hovhaness
Henry Cowell
Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco
Gunther Schuller.
